Cheering for an Old Friend

Less than a year ago, Dan Dakich was buying cheeseburgers for me and Brandi just because she sent him an email and asked him to have dinner with us. That was just before the first round MAC Tournament game against the Ohio Bobcats that would be his last game as head coach of the Bowling Green State University Falcons before tendering his resignation after ten years--the first five quite successful, the second five less so.

Now Coach Dakich is the head coach (temporarily, at least) of the Indiana Hoosiers, one of the premier basketball programs in the nation. I'm watching those Hoosiers play Ohio State right now on ESPN. It's almost surreal hearing Brent Musburger and Steve Lavin talk about him, and seeing him interviewed by Erin Andrews in front of a packed house in Assembly Hall, after being so used to seeing him on the sidelines in Anderson Arena, and after sharing burgers at Al-Mar Lanes in BG.

I don't usually have much of a rooting interest in any of the "big schools," but I'm a Hoosier fan for at least the rest of the season and hopefully longer. I know the chances are slim, but I'd love to see Coach Dakich get a shot at the job full time. He's a great guy, and he deserves it.

Good luck, Coach.
